EPL
title-chasers, Man United know that another setback today as they host
Sunderland could well kill off their faltering challenge, hence they have no
option but to fire on all cylinders.
Though
Man United have an edge, they must be at their best to win against a Sunderland
side that would want to do everything possible to survive relegation.
Both
sides have already met in a cup final this season but there is arguably more at
stake when they clash in the Premier League today.
Manuel
Pellegrini’s men came from a goal down to lift the Capital One Cup trophy with
a 3-1 win in March but the result of today’s game at the Etihad Stadium could
have significant implications at both ends of the table.
City’s
3-2 defeat at Anfield on Sunday left them seven points adrift of table-toppers
Liverpool and five short of second-placed Chelsea.
Despite
losing Ivorien international, Yaya Toure to injury, City would still remain
solid, especially with the return of the duo of Vincent Kompany and Sergio
Aguero who have been confirmed fit for the match.
Coach
Manuel Pellegrini said yesterday that losing at Antfield does not mean the EPL
title is out of City’s reach.
“[If] we
win our two postponed games and we’re a point behind. If you don’t believe we
can do it, you can’t believe in anything,” were his words last night. City
would after today’s game face West Brom in their second outstanding next week.
For
Sunderland, today’s clash is also like a do or die as they stand seven
points adrift of safety, although they hold two games in hand over 17th-placed
Norwich City.
