Ashley Cole quits England duty after World Cup omission
The Custodian May 12, 2014
Chelsea's Ashley Cole has retired
from international football after being left out of England's World Cup squad.
The 33-year-old left-back won 107
caps and played at three World Cups.
Southampton left-back Luke Shaw, 18,
will be included when England manager Roy Hodgson names
his 23-man squad, plus seven standby players, on Monday.
"I got the call from Roy and
agree the England team should be about the young players. I think it best I
retire from the England team now," said Cole.
"We have a great manager and
team and I wish them only success. I will be supporting them like a true fan.
Thanks to everyone for everything," Cole added on
Twitter.
"Leighton Baines and Shaw are
great players, proved this season, and are the future of this country, it was a
pleasure to get 107 caps.
"Like me or not, trust me it's
hurt me to stop playing for my country #proud and #honoured."
Hodgson, who will name his squad at
14:00 BST, said leaving Cole out of his squad for Brazil was "one of the
hardest decisions of my career".
"He's been an incredible
competitor for England," added Hodgson. "To amass over a century of
caps is a truly staggering achievement and he deserves enormous credit for the
desire and brilliance which has shone through over the years he has represented
his country.
"There are few players who can
be considered among the very best in the world, but Ashley in his prime was the
best left-back without question.
"In two years working with him
he has shown nothing but relentless professionalism, and a great hunger to play
for England. He is someone I have the utmost respect for and I wished him all
the best, he in turn wished the team well this summer.
"Of course I must respect his
decision to retire. He has been one of England's finest players, but I want to
look to the future."
Cole made his international debut
against Albania in March 2001.
He became only the seventh England
player to reach a century of caps when he appeared in a friendly win over
Brazil in February 2013.
But his opportunities at club level
have been limited this season.
The former Arsenal player made only
one substitute appearance in three months from late January for Chelsea,
although he did return to the side against Liverpool and Atletico Madrid.
It had been thought he might leave
Chelsea this summer, but boss
Jose Mourinho hinted this week that the veteran could yet stay at
Stamford Bridge.
Shaw's inclusion caps a fantastic
season for the teenager, who made 38 appearances for Southampton in all
competitions as they finished eighth in the Premier League.
He made his England debut in March's
1-0 friendly win over Denmark, coming on at half-time for Cole. Shaw was only
five years old when Cole won his first cap.
Ex-England
manager Graham Taylor and former
left-back Graham Le Saux both told BBC Sport in recent weeks they
would choose Shaw ahead of Cole, while Baines's form had seen him become the
favourite to start when England play their World Cup opener against Italy on 14
June.
Match of the
Day host Gary Lineker tweeted: "Gracious words from
Ashley Cole. Wish him well, he's been a terrific player."
And, on his final Match of the Day
appearance, Alan Hansen added: "He has been one of the greatest players
the Premier League has seen. As a full-back for Arsenal, Chelsea and England
there is nobody better in Premier League history.
"I would have taken him but I
can understand why Roy Hodgson hasn't. I watched him play in the Champions
League and against Liverpool and he was excellent but he hasn't been playing a
lot and that's probably the reason why Roy hasn't taken him."
Court to rule on Sanusi’s suit to stop FRC probe today
The Custodian May 12, 2014
A Federal High Court in Lagos state will on Monday deliver its judgment in a suit filed by the suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, seeking to stop the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) of Nigeria from probing him over alleged financial recklessness.
Justice John Tsoho, had fixed today after parties concluded their respective arguments for and against the suit at the last hearing.
Sanusi was suspended by President Goodluck Jonathan following allegation of financial recklessness by the FRC.
Alabi was appointed by Sanusi after he sacked the former Managing Director of the bank, Erastus Akingbola.
Saraki, now a Senator, had secured the said loan from Intercontinental Bank through his company, Joy Petroleum Limited.
Sanusi, however denies the allegation. He is accusing Akingbola of cooking up the story against him
The former CBN chief also denied that he did not follow due process in writing off another N3.8 billion loan in favour of Heritage Bank, successor to the defunct Societe Generale Bank of Nigeria (SGBN), a bank that had strong link with the Saraki family.
Speaking through his lawyer, Kola Awodein in court, Sanusi alleged that the entire FRC probe was orchestrated to nail him at all cost.
Boko Haram is being sponsored to rubbish Islam – Muslim cleric
The Custodian May 12, 2014
The National Chairman of the Izalla sect, famously known as Jama’atul Izalatul Sunnah, Sheik Sani Yahaya Jingir, has stated that the terror group, Boko Haram was being sponsored to dent the image of Islamic religion.
He enjoined all Muslims across the nation to continue to preach against terrorism and killings of innocent citizens, adding that Islam does not support terrorism.
Jingir, who made this call while addressing newsmen in Jos on Sunday, described as unfortunate the inability of the government to address the critical security problems confronting the country, especially in the North-Eastern region of the country.
“These security challenges in the country and in the North-East in particular has left the zone as the worse hit due to the current activities of Boko Haram and they are sponsored to spoil the image of Islam.”
He further called on the Federal and the state governments to, as a matter of urgency, formulate effective policies to tackle the current insecurity in the country and also deal with the debilitating poverty and the rising unemployment in the region.
Sheik Jingir noted that Nigerians were now under persecution in their own land, urging them not to be discouraged by the shortcomings of the leadership in the area of security.
He also expressed hope that the situation would soon become history.
Nigeria state governor "has information" on abducted girls
The Custodian May 12, 2014 (BBC)
The governor of Nigeria's Borno
state says he has information on the whereabouts of about 200 schoolgirls
kidnapped by Islamist group Boko Haram.
Governor Kashim Shettima said he had
passed reports of the sightings of the girls to the military for verification.
Mr Shettima added that he did not
think the girls had been taken across the border to Chad or Cameroon.
Earlier, France's president offered
to host a summit on Boko Haram.
"I suggested, with Nigerian
President Goodluck Jonathan, a meeting of Nigeria's neighbouring
countries" Francois Hollande said.
"If the countries agree, it
should take place next Saturday" he added.
Countries neighbouring Nigeria, such
as Cameroon, Niger and Chad, would be invited to the security summit.
Aides said the US, UK and EU would
also be likely to attend.
The US, UK and France have already
pledged technical assistance to the Nigerian government.
Meanwhile, President Jonathan said
an Israeli counter-terrorism team would arrive in Nigeria to help in searching
for the schoolgirls, who were abducted last month.
'Slaves'
French troops entered Mali last year
to push out al-Qaeda affiliated militants.
Both the US and UK distanced
themselves from suggestions that they would send soldiers to take part in the
military operation in the vast north of Nigeria.
"There's no intention at this
point to be putting any American boots on the ground" said US Defence Secretary
Chuck Hagel on Sunday.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron said
it was unlikely Nigeria would ask for British troops to help, but he added:
"I said to President Jonathan where we can help, please ask, and we will
see what we can do."
"I rang the Nigerian president
to offer anything that would be helpful and we agreed to send out a team that
includes some counter-terrorism and intelligence experts to work alongside the
bigger American team that's going out there."
Mr Cameron later tweeted his support for a hashtag aimed at
raising awareness of the abductions.
